Romance by candlelight – taking dreamy Valentine’s photographs

If you plan to share some special moments by candlelight this Valentine’s Day, why not capture the memory on camera? Don’t spoil the atmosphere by using a bright flash or switching all the lights on! Our top tips below will help you capture a romantic ambience in your shots:

  1. Switch the flash off and select a slow shutter speed, so that you’re making the most of the light you have to illuminate your shot. Some cameras may even have a ‘candlelight’ option, or you can adjust the settings manually.
  2. Light plenty of candles – place them all around you too, to make sure you get a mellow glow from all directions rather than a slightly scary up-lighting effect on your faces! (Do stay safe around the flames though, and only place candles on heat-resistant surfaces.)
  3. Include props – champagne bubbles look stunning lit by golden candlelight. Experiment with different angles and zoom to get some really artistic shots.
  4. Use a tripod – you’ll need a slow shutter speed to make the most of low light, and using a tripod will avoid blurry and shaky images. It also means you can set a timer and get both of you in shot (and smiling!) before the photo is taken.
  5. Don’t worry if the shot still comes out too dark – you can always introduce light from other sources, as long as it’s not too harsh. A lamp with a low-watt bulb can give the warm glow you need to boost the candlelight.

Enjoy experimenting and creating some beautiful shots as the perfect reminder of a romantic evening.
